Over a thousand years ago, Monataries and Churches in Ireland were plundered by Viking settlers for the silver and gold that they contained.

In what is now known as Dublin's Temple Bar area, skilled metalworkers worked these precious metals into a variety of stunning armlets, brooches, and rings. One of the most common pieces made was the Irish ringed-pin, which was used as a fastener for cloaks.

Brian Boru eventually drove the Vikings from Ireland after the Battle of Clontarf in 1014. However, much of the Viking heritage. In the 20th century, excavations at Wood Quay unearthed artifacts from that time. The jewelry and artifacts found served as the inspiration for the stunning Wood Quay Jewelry Collection.

One piece of Irish jewelry known the world over is the Irish Claddagh ring. Even the origin of the Claddagh ring is unclear, however, the most likely account is that Richard Joyce. Born in Galway during the 17th century, Joyce sought adventure as a young man, and decided to leave Ireland in search of work overseas. While at sea, Joyce’s ship was attacked by pirates and he was taken enslaved.

Eventually, Joyce was sold to a Moorish goldsmith. He began to learn the goldsmith trade and was released from captivity only after demands from Britain that all prisoners from English colonies be immediately freed. Ireland was one of those colonies at the time.

Joyce’s freedom did not sit too well with the Moorish goldsmith who even went so far as to offer his daughter’s hand in marriage if he would stay. However Joyce had an Irish sweetheart at home and he wanted to return to her. So he left his former owner and began the journey back to Ireland. While in captivity, Joyce had designed and made the first Claddagh ring, and on his return to Ireland, he presented it to his sweetheart. They settled just outside the town of Galway in the village of Claddagh.

One of the wonderful things about authentic Irish jewelry is that each piece is hallmarked at the Assay Office in Dublin Castle. Since 1637, hallmarking has been Irish law, used to ensure the quality of each piece. This office is run by the Company of Goldsmiths of Dublin, and they are charged with authenticating all silver, gold, and platinum jewelry.

There are three components in each hallmark:

The makers or sponsors mark

The mark of the Dublin Assay Office

The mark attesting to the fineness of the metal (Also known as the purity mark)

On rings, the hallmark is normally located on the inside of the band. The same applies to bracelets and bangles. For pendants, applying the hallmark is a little more difficult, as you don't want it to detract from the beauty of the piece. It is often applied to the "bail" of the piece, and is normally very small!

In the image below, you'll see some examples of the Irish jewelry hallmarks for silver, gold, and platinum. The "Date Letter" changes each year - signifying the year that the piece was created and hallmarked.

To many, Ireland is a mystical place, full of history, and ancient traditions. Today, it has emerged into a thriving nation with a highly-educated workforce, and prosperity previously unknown to the country.

As a result, are Irish traditions still alive and well? I believe so, and I think one of the most important indicators is the Irish gifts industry. All indications indicate that manufacturers and retailers of Irish gifts continue to fare well. Google trends does show a small decline in the activity for the term Irish gifts, but there remains a very sizable portion of the population of many countries that can trace their heritage back to Ireland. In the US, for example, it is estimated that 12% of the US population can trace their routes to Ireland. That’s roughly 36 million Americans.

Consumption of Ireland’s most favorite export, Guinness is also suffering a decline. However, I firmly believe that has more to do with the massive amounts of marketing now being conducted within Ireland (and other nations) due to recent economic booms.

However, the population of Ireland, and the size of that group of people claiming Irish descent is only growing. Most Irish people that I know (in the US, and in Ireland) are keen to keep a connection with their Irish heritage, and it would be unusual to find their homes devoid of Irish décor items, Irish collectibles, etc. In fact, most Irish people I know take great pride in presenting an Irish gift to another person, be they Irish or not. The purpose of a gift, after all, is to show the other person that you care about them, and that you have put thought and personal commitment into their gift. I think Irish gifts do that very well!

The popularity of various Irish beers, and Guinness in particular, has made Irish gifts featuring their logos extremely popular. With Guinness, for example, there is almost an infinite supply of barware, rugby shirts, hats, and other clothing that features the Guinness logo. Irish pub signs are also very popular gifts, particularly those with an old time feel and look to them.

Irish Home Décor
Last, but certainly not least, is Irish home décor. In this group, Irish gifts can range from mugs, to teapots, and from manufacturers such as Belleek to Mullingar Pewter. The History of the Claddagh Ring
Though there are two tales regarding the origin of the Claddagh ring, the more believable of the two is the story of Richard Joyce. According to legend, Joyce was captured whilst working as a fisherman, by pirates. He was then sold into slavery, eventually becoming an assistant to a Turkish goldsmith. Joyce learned the goldsmith craft under his new master for approximately 8 years. He was then released from slavery, and returned to Ireland. He settled in the town of Claddagh (just outside what is known today as Galway city) and designed and crafted the first Claddagh ring.

The Design of the Claddagh Ring
The Claddagh ring does not contain many of the traditional Irish symbols found in other pieces of Irish jewelry. Instead, it has its own unique design of the heart, hands and crown. The heart represents love, the hands represent friendship, and the crown represents loyalty. There have been versions of the Claddagh ring produced without a crown, as some thought it too reminiscent of the British Monarchy. However, the design that includes the crown is by far the most popular today.

Saint Patrick's Day Countdown 2009

Some of the best Irish gifts are the free ones! I have finally gotten around to finishing the coding for the 2009 version of our Saint Patrick's Day Countdown Google Gadget. It runs on Google Desktop (which is a lot like the Windows Vista sidebar, only better, and it works on Windows XP). Installing is simple, and it counts down the remaining days, hours, minutes, and seconds until our favorite day!

If you need to install the Google Desktop application, you can get it from Google here. Once done, there is a link at the end of this post for the Saint Patrick's Day Gadget. Click on the link, save the file to your desktop, and then double-click the saved file.

Right now, the Gadget is with Google to be entered into the Google Gadget Gallery (say that three times quickly). It normally takes a week or two to be included. Once it is there, I'll post the link and also update the 2008 Countdown page. HOWEVER, if you'd like to download the 2009 Gadget without waiting, it is available at the link below.

It's Never Too Early For Christmas Decor

There are 80 days left until Christmas! I don't know about everyone else, but Christmas is my all-time favorite part of the year. It has something to do with the chill in the air, and then getting inside to a nice warm house. It also marks the end of the busiest time of the year for us, with tons of people shopping for Irish gifts!

At any rate, my reason for posting was to let you know that we have added a great deal of new Christmas items to our Irish Christmas section this year. More animated treetoppers (Santas and Angels), more Christmas ornaments, and more of just about everything else. I wanted to just let you know that as most of these items are seasonal in nature, and when they are gone...they are gone. In most cases, there won't be any additional stock coming in as most of the distributors will be out too.

So, don't delay this year. It might be a bit early to celebrate Christmas, but its not too early to get a jump on your favorite Irish Christmas decor!

We Were Green Before Green Was Cool

OK, so a little play on words there - we offer Irish gifts, and a lot of what we sell is, of course, green. But, I was actually after a more serious topic. By our very nature as an online retailer, we're in a position to either:

1) do a lot of good for the environment, or

2) do a lot of damage to the environment

As responsible business owners, Julie and I have chosen option #1. Where we can make the largest impact is in how we run our warehouse. We receive a lot of product into it, and we ship a lot of product back out. What we've done is added large sorting bins to the receiving area in order that we can "salvage" the packing material used in our deliveries. Obviously, we only keep the stuff that still has life left in it. But, if it is perfectly good, why discard it?

When we ship, we re-use the material from the bins (they have wheels that make life a bit easier...) in some of the outbound packages. Naturally, not all of them are suitable candidates. Kraft paper, for example can be less than optimum material for long flat items, etc.

The boxes are another story - we normally have to recycle them. Most of them are simply too big to be re-used, but every now and then, we do get the chance. Mainly, they are stacked for weekly deliveries at the local recycling center. I cringe when I see other businesses simply fill dumpsters with cardboard boxes. It just seems like such a waste. Recycling is also the name of the game for office paper - even the shredded, cross-cut stuff.

You'd be surprised what a difference the above makes, compared to what it could be. For the most part, our only trash is the normal stuff that people discard. I'd ask you to think along the same lines when you receive a package from us, or anyone else, for that matter. Perhaps you'll be mailing packages at Christmas that you can use the boxes and materials for. What about storage? None of us ever seem to have enough!

Whatever the use, there is an excellent chance that both the box and the packing material have another trip or two left in them. I'm convinced that small steps like this can make a long term difference on the planet that we all share. So don't forget to go green with an Irish gift!

My Dad grew up in Dublin, before moving to the US when he was 12. He has fought for this country, and proudly flies the American flag in his front yard every day. The Tradition Of The Irish Wedding Coin

One of the most interesting Irish wedding customs that we’ve come across is that of the Irish wedding coin.

Traditionally, the groom presents the bride with this coin after the rings have been exchanged. It is a symbolic gift to the bride of all that the groom owns. The groom may also want to state “I give this coin to you as a symbol of all my possessions” or something similar in intent.

For those of you not familiar with Mullingar Pewter, they make some of the finest pewter in Ireland. Every piece is hand-finished and their quality is excellent! We've just loaded a new style of Unity candle candlestick at Celtic by Design, and I'm sure you'll agree that these are truly beautiful pieces.

Each candlestick has a continuous Celtic pattern around the exterior. The two taper holders can hold any "normal" size of taper candle. The larger centerpiece candlestick can take either a 3 or 4 inch Unity candle.

These great Guinness watches just arrived a few days ago. They look awesome and we rushed to get the pictures taken and get them up and available at Celtic By Design. There are two designs - the traditional Guinness Signature square watch and the Guinness "Bottle Opener" watch (this one is my favorite and I've included the image below). Yes, the bottle opener does work!
